The moonlight cast a silvery glow on our entwined bodies as Kristabella and I lost ourselves in each other's touch. Our moans filled the air as she explored my body with her mouth and tongue, expertly coaxing my climax to higher and higher peaks.

"Kristabella."

I breathed her name like a prayer, clutching at the soft sheets beneath us. It had been two weeks since our night with the General, and she had said nothing more about it—as though it hadn't happened at all.

But I couldn't forget it, nor could I deny that I wanted more.

Right now, however, Kristabella was the only thing on my mind as my climax crested and rushed through me. Kristabella moaned as I came hard on her tongue.

As my cries echoed off the chamber walls, the wooden door slammed open. The sudden sound jarred me from the world of ecstasy we had created.

My mother, Helena Batherst, stood in the doorway, her face a mask of shock and rage. The heat that had moments ago coursed through my veins was replaced by a cold dread.

"Explain yourself, Lyra!" she demanded, her sharp eyes boring into me with a cold intensity that could rival the northern ice fields.

Kristabella quickly untangled herself from me and grabbed her robe, wrapping it around her lithe form.

"What is the meaning of this?" she demanded.

"My Lady Palimenteri," my mother said with a smooth smile. "I must speak with my daughter, most urgently." Kristabella didn't move, any mother's expression hardened. "It is a... private matter. I'm sure you understand."

Kristabella shot me a pained look before she nodded and slipped out of the room without uttering another word.

I felt a sudden pang that she didn't stay—she had promised to protect me...

Once Kristabella had gone, my mother closed the door behind her and fixed me with a stern glare. "What were you thinking?" my mother hissed as she spun around to face me. "You know your duty to this family, and here I find you, playing the whore to the very woman you're supposed to replace."

Her words cut through me like a knife, reminding me of the precarious position our low-status family held in the court.

"Can you not see the consequences of your actions?" she continued, her voice laced with frustration. "You have jeopardized everything we've worked for, everything I have done for you—and for what? You shame yourself and this family."

I wrapped the sheet around my body, feeling more exposed and vulnerable than ever. I knew she was right—I had been reckless.

"Mother, it's not just—" I whispered, desperately trying to make her understand, even as I knew her disapproval would only deepen. "You have to trust me—I am getting closer to the General—"

"Enough!" she snapped, her voice cold and unyielding. "I have had enough of your lies and delays. You must make a choice, Lyra. Duty to me, or to the woman who just abandoned you?"

Her words hung heavily in the air between us and the weight of the decision before me pressed down on my chest until it was hard to breathe.
